Black White Music

Howard Conder

Howard often referred to as Howie, first began his career as a professional drummer at the age of sixteen, beginning with The Barron Knights, Joe Brown and the Bruvvers and after Joe went into the West End Theatre with Charlie Girl, Howard played drums for Unit 4+2 (Concrete & Clay), Billy Fury, Peter and Gordon and Heinz.

It was when playing drums for several Joe Meek sessions that Howard began to take an interest in how to record the drums like no other sound engineer had achieved in the early 60’s, where the drums sounded so HUGE.

Joe Meek’s influence eventually led Howard to start his own music studio, first in 1971 in Kingston upon Thames, England and then in the early 80’s Howard and his wife Lesley moved to Tampa Florida in the USA and opened London Music Studios.

Howard was one of the first in Tampa to record electronic music, using the very first Mac computer along with Master Tracks software. His musical equipment list comprised of the original Jupiter 8 synthesizer, Emulator sampling keyboard, Linn drum, TR808 and many other toys which eventually led a certain young man, Fitzgerald Scott to want to use Howard to demo his music which was now in a converted garage at his home in Green Leaf Drive, North Tampa. However, this young man soon ran out of money and could no longer afford to rent the studio and Howard said to Scott that he would help him to finish his project. However, these sessions went on for at least 18 months, often working many hours a week, without charge to Scott. This young man sold over 30 million records with numerous artists starting with Keith Sweat. There is a lot more to this story which will come out in full in future bulletins/projects.

Howard was also involved with other aspects of the Music Industry in the 70’s such as supplying music equipment to many successful musicians and performers and often specialized in unique instruments for their recording sessions such as Johnny Nash (I Can see Clearly Now), Bob Marley, The Moody Blues, Rolling Stones, Garry Glitter and Gary Moore to mention a few.

Howard was invited by Robert Stigwood to audition the Bee Gees shortly after they returned to the UK circa the mid 60’s and he joined NEMS Enterprises (Brian Epstein’s company) as a record producer and then went onto opening his own Music Store, the Howard Conder Music Centre at number 8 Eden Street Kingston upon Thames.

Howard, now at the age of 75 is returning to the music scene having spent 30 years in the Christian Television industry and now Howard, along with William hope to help talented singer/song writers to achieve their full potential.
